Works with your MTD software
Updated 25 October 2026.
RecordsIn collects and sorts your clients' quarterly records. Your own MTD software files the quarterly update, and RecordsIn does not replace that software or connect to it today.
What you download
Download a ZIP of the accepted files for one quarter. The file for the whole practice is named 2026-27-Q3 records.zip. A file for one client is named with that quarter, the client name, and .zip.
Each client has a folder, and the quarter has a folder inside it. A file linked to a checklist item starts with a two-digit item number, then the item name, a hyphen, and the original file name. A file with no checklist item goes in a numbered folder called Other.
The ZIP includes index.csv. That file lists the new path, the original file name, the checklist item, the status, when the file arrived, and who sent it. The header row is:
path,original_filename,item,status,received_at,sender
Files you have not reviewed stay out unless you tick Include files not yet reviewed. Those files go in a folder named To review. A signature image from the email stays out until you accept it. Rejected files and deleted files are not in the ZIP.
Direct integrations are not built.
How a quarter works
- The client replies to the practice email with the files attached. The client does not log in.
- RecordsIn files each attachment under that client and that quarter.
- Reminders on day 7, day 14 and day 21 list what is still missing.
- You download the ZIP and file the quarterly update in your own software.
Software on HMRC's list
All software listed has been through HMRC's recognition process. HMRC does not recommend any product or software provider. GOV.UK.
Names belong to their owners.
GOV.UK says the software has to:
- create, store and correct digital records of your self-employment and property income and expenses.
- send your quarterly updates to HMRC. These are summaries of your self-employment and property income and expenses. They are not tax returns.
- add any other income sources you have and submit your tax return by 31 January the following year.
The name in the table is the heading on the product page. Checked 25 October 2026. Where a row says bridging software, that is HMRC's term.
